Cora made herself eat something and settle in at home before she called Brooklyn. As if she was just checking in and not in danger of bursting to talk about the mess going on inside her head. She turned on her computer and poured herself a mug of coffee. Then she picked up her phone.
It rang before she had a chance to even unlock it.
She glared at her friend’s name scrolling across the top of the screen. “You have a camera hidden somewhere around here, don’t you?”
“Please. I don’t need to spy on you to know how your mind works. It was only a matter of time before you slipped the guy’s leash and ran home to figure stuff out.” Slot machines dinged in the background and Brooklyn sighed. “I should have charged him more. I despise Vegas.”
“You’re not too fond of LA, either.” One of her friend’s favorite pastimes was bitching about everything from the traffic to the people to whatever was pissing her off on that particular day.
Brooklyn laughed. “I like the beach. It soothes my cranky soul, and there is absolutely no beach in the middle of the godforsaken desert. Which is why I’m working double time right now.”
Cora’s personal stuff could wait. Finding that woman and securing Jack’s future was the highest priority—it had to be. “You’ve only been there, what, an hour or two?”
“I work fast.” Brooklyn laughed. “That’s what she said. Oh, my God, I crack myself up.”
“Brooklyn.” Cora tried to take a severe tone and lost it. “You’re out of control.”
“When in Vegas.” She cleared her throat. “Anyway, I cleared the way with the heads of security at both the casino and the strip club before I got on the plane. I might have mentioned a high-profile lawsuit if they didn’t cooperate—and our client’s willingness to not go to the police if the perpetrator is found.”
It was shady and not altogether legal, but that had never stopped Brooklyn when she set her mind to something. “You’re brilliant.”
“You would have thought of it yourself if you weren’t all twisted up over this guy.” She paused. “I’ve never seen you like this. If anyone else had tried to pull that macho shit this morning, I’d have had to rent a boat so we could dispose of a body discreetly.”
Cora snorted. “You watch too much Dexter.”
“The man knows his way around a crime scene.” The background sounds became quieter as she apparently moved away from the casino floor. “Back to business—one of the strippers definitely dropped something in Jack’s drink. She’s real subtle about it. So subtle, I wouldn’t have noticed if I wasn’t looking for exactly that. Manager says her name is Cherry, but the name on her employee application is none other than—”
“Lysa-with-a-Y Smith.”
“Way to take my thunder, Cora. You know how much I love the big reveals and you just swooped in like eagle.”
Cora laughed. “Next time, the big reveal is all yours. Did you find her?”
“I’m good, but I’m not a miracle worker.
